Berry's Essay Exerpt

After reading Wendell Berry's essay, The Use of Energy, I came to realize that energy can be a nexus to everything around us. One thing that sticks out to me is the way he wrote about the circle of life. The example that he chose was agriculture. My parents are farmers also, and they tell me how to do farming, therefore, I can relate to what he wrote. When I went to the farm, I saw a pile of chicken poop on the ground. I didn't like the smell of it, or even the sight. I complained and asked them why they use it. They told me the cycle of why they raise chickens, and use their natural fertilizer for the vegetables. It was interesting to hear this. They also told me that they don't like to use machines for the crops and they do it by hand. Even though it consumes more time, they are willing to do so. My family consists of having lots of land for farming. It's been like that with their parents and so on. I appreciate all of the effort that they do for a living, and some day, I hope to continue this family tradition.
